Patented by William Terry in 1855, the Calisher and Terry Carbine held a .54 caliber Minié bullet encased in a nitrated paper wrapper containing the powder cost, with a greased felt wad. Adopted by the British army in 1860 for cavalry use, it armed the 18th Hussars and noticed motion within the colonial forces of Australia and New Zealand from 1863. The carbine even made a cameo within the American Civil Struggle, with Accomplice leaders J.E.B. Stuart and Jefferson Davis possessing examples.
